About the role
Birmingham City Council are looking for experienced and motivated individuals to join the Housing Solutions and Support Service as Senior Property and Support Officers. This is a key operational role where you will support the delivery of Temporary Accommodation (TA) services, helping the Council meet its statutory homelessness duties and wider housing priorities.
You will play an important role in supporting a service operating at significant scale, with over 5,500 households currently in Temporary Accommodation and an expanding portfolio of provision across the city. This includes a mix of dispersed accommodation and larger sites, all of which require strong operational oversight to ensure properties are safe, compliant, and used effectively.
Working closely with Temporary Accommodation Managers, you will help oversee day-to-day service delivery, ensuring households are placed in suitable accommodation, supported throughout their stay, and successfully moved on into longer-term housing.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a high-impact service, contributing to reducing reliance on unsuitable accommodation and improving outcomes for some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
What you will be doing
In this operational role, you will:
- Support the day-to-day operation of the Temporary Accommodation service, ensuring high-quality and compliant service delivery
- Provide tenancy support to households in temporary accommodation, helping them to sustain their placement and move on successfully
- Oversee and coordinate property inspections, health & safety checks, and ensure accommodation meets required standards
- Support the placement of households into suitable emergency accommodation, ensuring decisions are fair, lawful, and evidence-based
- Help reduce reliance on Bed and Breakfast accommodation and support move-on into more suitable housing options
- Contribute to tenancy management activity, including handling breaches, managing risk, and supporting safeguarding processes
- Assist with income collection and housing benefit processes to minimise arrears and financial risk
- Supervise and support a small team of officers, providing guidance, performance management and mentoring
- Work closely with casework teams, partners and providers to deliver coordinated support and housing solutions
- Monitor performance and contribute to service improvements using data and operational insights
- Maintain accurate case and property records in line with service and legislative requirements
About you
We are looking for confident and capable individuals who can operate effectively in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
You will bring:
- Experience working in housing, homelessness, property management, or a related frontline service
- A good understanding of homelessness, Temporary Accommodation, and relevant housing legislation
- An understanding and awareness of supporting or supervising staff within a performance-driven environment
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work with vulnerable households and manage sensitive situations
- An awareness of health & safety and housing standards
- The ability to manage competing priorities and respond to changing service demands
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
- Confidence using IT systems and maintaining accurate records
- The ability to build effective relationships with colleagues, partners and stakeholders
- A commitment to delivering high-quality services and improving outcomes for residents
These roles are hybrid, with working arrangements based on service needs and requiring attendance at face-to-face meetings.
