Common questions

What do AO, EO, HEO and SEO mean?

They're Civil Service grades — a national hierarchy of responsibility levels used across departments (and in job titles). SEO here means Senior Executive Officer, not search-engine optimisation. Our grades guide maps them all, including what level a director sits at.

Do I need a degree to join the Civil Service?

For most roles, no — grades below the Fast Stream generally ask for evidence against behaviours and experience, not qualifications. Specialist professions (legal, science, analysis) set their own requirements in the advert.
