About Local council jobs

Local government is the broadest employer in the UK public sector: hundreds of councils delivering social care, education support, housing, planning, environmental health, waste, leisure and back-office services. Most councils pay on the national NJC pay spine using locally evaluated grades — the structure (spinal column points, annual increments, job evaluation) is explained in our council pay guide. Which councils does GovJobs cover?

We aggregate from official council job boards and recruitment systems — including the West Midlands and Scottish shared portals, national council boards and individual councils' own systems — and de-duplicate where the same advert appears in more than one. What is the NJC pay spine?

A national series of numbered pay points that most councils use. Each job is evaluated onto a grade spanning several points, and you normally progress a point a year within your grade. Our council pay guide walks through it.

Are term-time-only council jobs a thing?

Yes — schools-facing roles (teaching assistants, catering, admin) are often term-time-only with pay pro-rated accordingly. The advert states the working weeks; check how the salary is expressed before comparing offers.
