Job description
The North West Regional Organised Crime Unit is a collaborative multi agency covert response to tackle serious and organised crime across the North West Region.
The Investigation Support Officer is an individual allocated to undercover operations to work effectively as part of a team responsible for the safe and ethical deployment of Undercover Foundation Officers. Key responsibilities for the ISO role, include the following:
- Providing investigative support for the delivery of the undercover tactic, in line with Approved Professional Practice, including ensuring that observation evidence pertaining to criminal activity, is recorded timely, effectively and documented accordingly
- Providing operational support to Undercover Foundation Operatives and the wider team, to ensure that they are deployed in a safe and ethical manner during authorised investigations, minimising the risk of compromise to the operatives and the overall operation, maximising safety and ethical collection of intelligence and/or evidence.
Previous experience in covert policing is beneficial but not essential, what is required is experience and confidence in dealing with risk and making fast time decisions to alleviate risk, whilst managing wider operational objectives.
The NWROCU leads the policing response across the region posed by serious and organised crime in Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and North Wales. The NWROCU provides the vital link from national capabilities and expertise to local policing and knowledge, enabling the North West region to deliver the Government’s serious and organised Crime strategy and to protect communities from harm.
The post is subject to an initial secondment of two years reviewable based on continuous funding and performance.
Further developments in NWROCU’s capabilities are anticipated in the future. Applications received for Operational roles that require mandatory Officer Safety/First Aid training must hold valid in date training or able to undertake upon application.
The Grade of this role has been determined using the Merseyside HAY procedure and has been afforded a Merseyside Grade E. This equates to a salary range of £33,603 - £39,276. Successful applicants from other Regional Forces will be paid a salary within this pay range. These are full time roles working ‘flexitime’ however, applicants must be aware that there is a requirement for the post holders to be flexible in relation to working hours.

Successful applicants working within NWROCU will be subject to MV (Management Vetting) and SC (Security Clearance) prior to taking up post.
