Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two experienced Senior Clinical Embryologist to join the Assisted Conception Unit at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS T...

The post holder will support monitoring and assurance of embryology laboratory performance through key performance indicators and audit programmes, and continuous quality improvement initiatives. They will oversee performance monitoring, ensure compliance with HFEA requirements, and implement corrective and preventative actions to maintain high standards of safety, quality, effectiveness, and regulatory compliance. The role will support preparation for and participation in HFEA inspections, ensuring ongoing readiness and adherence to licence conditions and standards.

Working closely with the Embryology Team ,the post holder will contribute to the strategic development of the fertility service, including service planning, transformation initiatives, and introduction of new technologies and laboratory practices. They will also contribute to business planning and service development proposals aimed at improving patient outcomes, efficiency, and service sustainability.

The post holder will maintain advanced clinical and technical competence in embryology, undertaking laboratory procedures for approximately 30% of their working time to ensure continued hands-on expertise and clinical credibility. As a member of the Embryology Senior Leadership Team, they will provide specialist advice to support strategic and operational decision-making and contribute to service planning, governance, audit, and risk management, ensuring safe, effective, and compliant service delivery.

Essential: - BSc/ Degree in Life Sciences; - Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC); - Familiar HFEA Code of Practice and other relevant legislation and clinical governance; - Relevant postgraduate specialist training/qualification in Clinical Embryology, Reproductive Science or Andrology; - Substantial experience in Clinical Embryology, Reproductive Science and/or Andrology within a fertility service; - ICSI practitioner ( not applicable for Andrologist)

Desirable: - Certificate/Diploma in Clinical Embryology or equivalent relevant specialist qualification; - FRCPath by examination in Reproductive Science/Medicine, or evidence of equivalent qualification, experience and achievement; - Relevant professional certification, e.g. ACE/ESHRE or equivalent

Essential: - Proven Clinical Embryology experience; - Experience of supervising, training and assessing competency of junior staff; - Experience of clinical risk management; - Experience of working within a regulated clinical laboratory and applying relevant quality and governance requirements; - Experience of monitoring laboratory performance/KPIs and contributing to service improvement

Desirable: - Experience of HFEA and/or HTA inspection preparation; - Experience of evaluating, validating and implementing new laboratory techniques, equipment or technologies; - Experience of research, publication or presentation within reproductive science

Essential: - Good knowledge of relevant HFEA/HTA requirements, consent, traceability and clinical governance; - Ability to provide senior scientific leadership and exercise sound professional judgement; - Ability to interpret KPIs, audit and quality data and implement improvement actions; - Demonstrate leadership and people management skills, including workforce planning and performance management

Desirable: - Knowledge of UKAS/ISO requirements where relevant; - Evidence of leadership or people management training
