Councils pay on NJC pay scales — locally agreed grades built from nationally negotiated spinal column points. Each grade covers a small range of points, and staff usually move up one point a year until they reach the top of the grade. Because grades are set locally, the same job title can sit on different grades at neighbouring councils, so compare the advertised range rather than the grade label.
