Job description

An opportunity has arisen for one candidate to join a growing, dynamic and forward thinking Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department at Chelsea & Westminster Foundation Trust. The candidate will join a faculty of 21 consultants working across our 2 Hospitals; Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital.

The Trust sees a high number of patients with upper gastrointestinal and HPB cancers because of the established close clinical links with The Royal Marsden Hospital. The Chelsea & Westminster Hospital is represented on RM partner's tumour group. There are weekly upper GI/HPB MDTs (both benign and malignant) with excellent support from expert interventional radiology and surgical colleagues.

This post will offer 3 interventional endoscopy training lists per week. Interventional endoscopy are all performed in dedicated room with fixed fluoroscopy equipment. All lists are anaesthetic supported with all cases performed with either deep propofol sedation or GA. Additionally, the post holder will be expected to deliver 4 general endoscopy service lists per week in a semi annualised format.

This post will offer 3 interventional endoscopy training lists per week. Interventional endoscopy are all performed in dedicated room with fixed fluoroscopy equipment. All lists are anaesthetic supported with all cases performed with either deep propofol sedation or GA.

  • The lists are mixed lists containing ERCP, EUS, luminal stenting/dilatation, some EMR e.g. duodenal.
  • Total cases performed per year: ERCP > 400, EUS > 200.
  • ERCPs grade 1-4 performed including hilar strictures, PSC, pancreatic duct intervention, laparoscopic assisted ERCP. Plan to introduce cholangioscopy in near future.
  • Interventional EUS including drainage of peripancreatic fluid collections, Axios/LAMS

Additionally, the post holder will be expected to deliver 4 general endoscopy service lists per week in a semi annualised format.

All duties must be carried out under supervision or within Trust policy and procedure. You must never undertake any duties that are outside your area of skill or knowledge level. If you are unsure, you must seek clarification from a more senior member of staff.

As detailed above, this post will provide 3 ERCP/EUS training lists per week and the post holder will also deliver 4 general endoscopy service lists.

Should the postholder wish, there may be opportunities to also perform waiting list initiative endoscopy lists.

1. Outpatient endoscopy activity

  • The post holder will be expected to deliver 4 general endoscopy lists per week (OGD/colonoscopy/flexible sigmoidoscopy) in a semi annualised format likely in a 6 week rolling block
  • The post holder will be expected to support 3 interventional endoscopy lists per week
  • AM endoscopy lists are booked at 12 points and PM endoscopy lists are booked at 10 points
  • A further 1 DCC will be provided to allow the post holder to do patient related admin related to the endoscopy lists
  • 2 SPA sessions will be provided (1.5 core SPA, 0.5 SPA clinical audit) to make this a 10PA role

  • CCT (or within 6 months of CCT) or on the Specialist Register. The candidate should be accredited in both General Medicine and Gastroenterology.
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice
  • Higher degree e.g. PhD or MD or fellowship
  • Broad experience in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology
  • Teaching experience / willingness to teach medical, nursing & other staff
  • Experience and competence in OGD and colonoscopy - JAG accredited
  • Experience of audit / clinical research
  • Experience in Upper GI Diseases (Benign and Malignant)
  • Undertaken a management course
  • Understanding of the NHS and its organisation
  • Completed publications in appropriate journal(s)

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lead a team
  • Commitment to work with other consultants and members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Commitment to the achievement of Government and Trust targets
